Apple Update iTunes to 10.1

Apple has released version 10.1 of it’s popular media client, iTunes. This latest update brings a few fixes, as well as compatibility for the upcoming iOS 4.2. It is available now via Software Update, or the iTunes download page.

What’s new in iTunes 10.1:

Use AirPlay to instantly and wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the all-new Apple TV.
Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.2.
Provides a number of important stability and performance improvements.

The release of iTunes 10.1 today, brings the release of iOS 4.2 even closer! Stay tuned!

OS X 10.6.5 Released!

Apple has released an update to Snow Leopard, in OS X 10.6.5. It is available now, via Software Update.

With this update to Snow Leopard now in the wild, we should expect an iTunes update and an iOS update. iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2 have been in beta, for a while now. The GM of iOS 4.2 was seeded to developers not too long ago, so we should see that go public soon. Some speculate that we will see both of these by the end of the week.

Useful Apps: VoodooPad and VP Reader by Flying Meat

Sometimes I can remember the most obscure detail from the remote past. Sometimes I can’t remember what I was doing yesterday. How do I remember all the insignificant trivia that I need to do my job or use my computer?

VoodooPad by Flying Meat is a notepad with hierarchy, links, search, relationship, and paste capabilities. You can record web links in a context that you will remember why you saved it in the first place. Maybe add a reminder why. The coolest part is it is completely unstructured. You don’t have to organize your thoughts to save it. You just dump it onto a page as if your were creating a webpage or using a private wiki. You can paste in parts of web pages (from Grab.app) or spreadsheets or documents or parts of PDFs. Supposedly you can import whole documents, but I don’t.

It works on a Mac. And you can replicate all your data on your iPhone with VP Reader in the App Store. So as you store important information, you can look it up on the phone when you are away from your mac. The export to iPhone only works via WiFi.

Turn on WiFi on your Mac and iPhone
You open VP Reader on the iPhone and press “Sync”
In VoodooPad on the Mac you “File,” “Export Document,” and “Export to iPhone”
VoodooPad “sees” VP Reader and you hit the Export Button.

Right now, you can’t edit on the iPhone. But you can write notes and then cut and paste them into VoodooPad when you are back at the Mac.

What books did I mean to read?
Tips on writing a good resume.
What CDs did I loan to my kids and never got back?
Who did that video on LinkTV that I liked?
How do I change the path on my Mac?
How do I cpio directories?
How do I login to this WordPress and write this article?

And I have to admit, I still can’t remember why I saved half this stuff.

The folks at Flying Meat have added the ability to sync your documents (the whole hierarchy) between your Macs using MobileMe or any WebDAV server. And you can publish your whole hierarchy on your MobileMe or another web server and make it available to anyone via a web browser. Not smart if you don’t want people to see your Explanation of Benefits. But if you wanted to use it to distribute reference information to your workgroup, or if you wanted to access the data from a non-Mac computer it is a great feature. Supposedly you can serve the web page with your MobileMe password as security. But it takes some extra steps so don’t do the publishing thing if you are planning to keep private information.

I have been using this for so long, I can’t imagine functioning without it. Now if I could only find an app that will help me forget pesky memories….

Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H562 To Developers

This week Apple seeded the eighth build of Mac OS X 10.6.5 to developers, build 10H562, and comes as a 615.9 MB file. This build comes over one week after Apple seeded the seventh build of Mac OS X 10.6.5, build 10H555 .

According to reports, the build focuses on Printing, USB Devices, 3D Graphics, QuickTime, and Time Machine.

FaceTime Comes to Mac!

Well, we knew it wouldn’t be long before FaceTime came to our desktops. Today Apple announced FaceTime for Mac. FaceTime is the innovative new video chat, that they introduced on the iPhone 4, then more recently in the new iPod Touch. Now we can video chat between our mobile devices and our Mac computers.

Apple has released a public beta of FaceTime for Mac. I had the chance to give it a try, and it actually works very well, for a beta release. You simply sign in with your Apple ID (same thing you use to sign into iTunes), and then you’re ready to video chat. It automatically adds all the contacts from your address book, so you just select who you want to FaceTime with, from the list. I did a simple test, calling myself. It worked great over WiFi, and if you have your device jailbroken, you can FaceTime with a Mac, over 3G.

iLife ’11 Available Now!

the new iLife ’11 is available in the Apple Online store now, for $49 (USD). Unfortunately, it is not available, via software download, so you’ll have to wait for the DVD install disc to come to your house.

Apple “Back To The Mac” Event: 20th October

Apple just announced that it will be holding an event on 20th October and is going to be something related to Mac, as the title suggests. What to expect from this event?

Well… first you can expect new hardware, as well and maybe the next version of OS X. And as Steve Jobs always keeps us updated in the beginning of all the keynotes about news from the ‘i’ world, maybe, just maybe, he’ll give us a hint about the much speculated Verizon iPhone or the Mini iPad… who knows what else they’ve invented now.

So in about a week we’ll get to know what’s new and keep you updated.

Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H548 To Devs

This week Apple seeded the sixth build of Mac OS X 10.6.5 to developers, build 10H548, and comes as a 599MB file. This build comes about two weeks ago after Apple seeded Mac OS X 10.6.5, build 10H542.

According to reports, the build focuses on iCal, Mail, USB Devices, 3D Graphics, QuickTime and Time Machine.
