How To: Deal With An iPhone Dropped In Water (Bag of Rice) [Video]

Did your iPhone just experience water damage? If so, the iFixit team has published a video on YouTube, giving us a brief rundown of what to do if you happen to drop your iPhone in water.

So, what to do if this happens? Follow the steps below:

  • Turn off the phone immediately – if stuck on White pinwheel, hold the home and power button until it shuts off.
  • Remove sim card and place iPhone in a bag of uncoocked rice. Remove any extra air and seal.
  • Either mail the water damaged iPhone to iFixit, or wait 48 to 76 hours after the water exposure and then try it out. If you find at that time it is not functioning properly as a result of the iPhone water damage, put back in the rice and mail to us.

I experienced water damage to my iPhone 2G/3GS and performed the bag of rice. Yes, it does work!

Have you dropped your iDevice in water before and revived it? Share your tricks and tips in the comments.

This happened to me once. My iPod touch went through the full wash and full dry cycle. Put the thing in rice and left it for a few days, and it worked!

I didn't submerse my iPhone, but I sweat all over it once. Sweat got into home button and elsewhere. I made a fixture for my vacuum cleaner out of a racket ball. http://tinyurl.com/2bxp45b 1. Cut a slot half way through the ball for the iPhone. 2. Cut a hole on the other side of the ball. 3. Use a paper clip to remove the SIM card and tray. 4. Insert one end of the iPhone into the ball slot and tape around with packing tape. 5. Place the vacuum cleaner hose over the ball hole and vacuum. 6. Untape and reattach ball slot to other end of iPhone and repeat.

It may speed the drying process if you vacuum your phone before placing it in rice. Just a suggestion.
