iPhone 3G Being Retired

After numerous reports around the net yesterday and today, it would seem that the iPhone 3G is headed to the grave, along with the original iPhone.

If you take a look at the US online Apple Store, there’s not even a select button under the iPhone 3G. You cannot order this unit from Apple anymore.

There have also been reports that the iPhone 3G, 8GB, is gone from Walmart stores, and they have replaced it with the iPhone 3GS, 16GB, for $97. The iPhone 3GS, 32GB is still $297.

By now, I think we’re all pretty convinced that there will be a new iPhone announced in 2 weeks, at Apple’s annual WWDC, but how soon it will be released is still in question. Could we see the new iPhone ready to hit the streets in June? I suppose it’s possible, but with the international iPad launch just about to go down, it might be too close. I predict, end of June, at the earliest, is when we will see the new iPhone.

So, how long before the iPhone 3G is not even supported anymore, like the original iPhone? A safe prediction would be that when iPhone OS 5 is announced, next year, there will be no update for the poor ‘ole iPhone 3G.
