iPhone 3GS 8GB Now available for Pre Order in Canada. Carrier Unlocked?

We knew iPhone 4 was going to be available for pre-order today in the US, but something we didn’t know was going to happen is: the iPhone 3GS 8GB is now available for pre-order in the Canadian Apple online store. You can buy it, out right, without a contract, for $549.

I went through the hoops, to purchase the 8GB 3GS, and no where does it ask to select a carrier. Could it be that the iPhone 3GS 8GB is carrier unlocked for Canada?!! With 5 carriers for the iPhone in Canada, this would make sense.

Engadget is reporting that iPhone 4 will be sold unlocked in the UK, another country with multiple carriers. Could we see the same thing, here in Canada? Only time will tell!
