[UPDATED] iPhone HD Found in the Wild?

Engadget is reporting that they were sent some new pics of what could be the next iPhone. From the pics it looks like a prototype, with some of the new features that have been wildly rumoured lately.

We have seen a few fakes, already. Some good, some bad, and some so obviously fake, they were silly. These look like legit photos of an iPhone of some sorts. Whether this is an old prototype, new prototype, or the actual fourth generation of iPhone, who knows, but I like this design! Take a look at the pics, and decide for yourself. Real or fake?

Here’s what Engadget had to say about the pics:

Is this the iPhone 4G (or iPhone HD)? There’s no way to tell for sure, but these photos which made their way into our hands certainly do a convincing job of making us think that’s very much the case. Apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don’t have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn’t booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It’s not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it’s certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

No doubt we will see more and more “leaked” pics, before we see the official 4th gen iPhone, but these looked pretty good. I would like for Apple deviate from the design they have had for the past 2 generations of the iPhone.

[UPDATE 2] MacRumors reports this to be fake, and have posted pics of a Japanese counterfeit iPhone, that looks a lot like the one above:

[UPDATE 3] Engadget is now wsaying that they have proof, that this is INDEED, an actual iPhone prototype. In this pic they released the day before the iPad was officialy announced, they bragged about having an actual photo of  the iPad. Upon further review of the photo, it would seem there is a device in the upper right hand corner that very closely resembles the device found in the pics they released yesterday.

Now add these pics from WeiPhone, and we’ve got lots of proof, that this is the next iPhone:
