Skype 2.0 for iPhone Allows 3G Calling
The Skype app for iPhone has been updated to 2.0. It now includes, the long awaited capability to make calls over your 3G data network. Previously, you could only make calls when connected to WiFi. A few months ago, Apple opened up this restriction, and now we finally have an update from Skype.
Upgrades / improvements include:
- Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
- Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.
- Enhanced call quality indicator.
- Improved start-up time.
- Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.
If you don’t already a have a monthly plan from Skype, you’ll need to get one, if you want to make Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G. Their plans are very reasonable, though. I pay $2.98 per month, and can call anywhere, any number all over the US and Canada.

I don’t know if it was just me, or because my iPhone is jailbroken, but after updating Skype, I could not log in. On WiFi, or 3G, it was just stuck at the “Signing in…” screen, forever. Then I synced my iPhone with iTunes, and everything worked fine.
