Useful Apps: VoodooPad and VP Reader by Flying Meat

Sometimes I can remember the most obscure detail from the remote past. Sometimes I can’t remember what I was doing yesterday. How do I remember all the insignificant trivia that I need to do my job or use my computer?

VoodooPad by Flying Meat is a notepad with hierarchy, links, search, relationship, and paste capabilities. You can record web links in a context that you will remember why you saved it in the first place. Maybe add a reminder why. The coolest part is it is completely unstructured. You don’t have to organize your thoughts to save it. You just dump it onto a page as if your were creating a webpage or using a private wiki. You can paste in parts of web pages (from Grab.app) or spreadsheets or documents or parts of PDFs. Supposedly you can import whole documents, but I don’t.

It works on a Mac. And you can replicate all your data on your iPhone with VP Reader in the App Store. So as you store important information, you can look it up on the phone when you are away from your mac. The export to iPhone only works via WiFi.

Turn on WiFi on your Mac and iPhone
You open VP Reader on the iPhone and press “Sync”
In VoodooPad on the Mac you “File,” “Export Document,” and “Export to iPhone”
VoodooPad “sees” VP Reader and you hit the Export Button.

Right now, you can’t edit on the iPhone. But you can write notes and then cut and paste them into VoodooPad when you are back at the Mac.

What CDs did I loan to my kids and never got back?

And I have to admit, I still can’t remember why I saved half this stuff.

The folks at Flying Meat have added the ability to sync your documents (the whole hierarchy) between your Macs using MobileMe or any WebDAV server. And you can publish your whole hierarchy on your MobileMe or another web server and make it available to anyone via a web browser. Not smart if you don’t want people to see your Explanation of Benefits. But if you wanted to use it to distribute reference information to your workgroup, or if you wanted to access the data from a non-Mac computer it is a great feature. Supposedly you can serve the web page with your MobileMe password as security. But it takes some extra steps so don’t do the publishing thing if you are planning to keep private information.

I have been using this for so long, I can’t imagine functioning without it. Now if I could only find an app that will help me forget pesky memories….

Google Goggles Comes to the iPhone

Google has updated their Google Mobile App for iPhone. It now includes the popular “Google Goggles” from the Android OS.

New! Google Goggles – use pictures to search the web. Goggles recognizes things such as landmarks, books, wine, artwork, and logos.

From my experience, the app works great for books and DVDs. I have not yet tried it with landmarks, but this video shows Google Goggles in action:

Finger Stomp HD for the iPad

I saw Finger Stomp HD in the Appstore’s New & Newsworthy section and decided to give it a try. If Apple selects it than it has to be decent right? Reading over the description, the App says that it lets you recreate your favorite street music and urban hip-hop beats., which immediately brought me to attention.

Even using the word, “Old-School” made me think about Kool & The Gang and all those times making hiphop beats with my friends on the basketball court benches. Another thing is when I first visited New York and New Orleans. I fondly remember the street musicians and all their amazing sounds (especially the drummers!). So does Finger Stomp HD actually allow you to recreate street music and all those jazzy beats?

Opening the app, you can immediately tell that the developer put a lot of effort into designing the app. The images are crisp and clear, and the background (albeit on an iPad) does it’s best to offer the user some kind of authentic urban experience.

But I didn’t buy the app to look at the background; I bought it to see if it really lets me recreate street music. The street instruments are quite various like trash cans, tires, various signs & boards, whistles, basket whooshes, crowd woo’s and etc. Simply touching on these street instruments plays the given sound. The sounds sound quite authentic to me, so another +1 for great audio!

Now with the beats. So you can pick and choose what instruments you want, and there is a BPM counter and a Metronome to let you actually stay on beat. Which was really helpful for someone who can’t normally keep a rhythm! You can turn 3D sound off and on, and I preferred to keep it off as real street musicians don’t have that feature.

There are really a lot of different beats and sounds you can make so the possibilities are really endless. And when you actually get to make something that sounds decent you can also record it and show off to your friends (which I have yet to do with the latter) . But for those who are interested in making some interesting beats and sounds without the complexity of DJ apps and head-ache giving mixers than this app is definitely for you.

One thing I regret is not having any friends who can rap or do some kind of hiphop, that would give it another bonus, but that’s more me than the app. Great concept, interesting app, and I look forward to seeing what more comes from this developer.

VLC for iPad App Released

The iPad has come close to replacing the netbook, but it does have it’s limits. When watching video, you’re limited to only a few formats, as the iPad isn’t compatible with popular codecs like XVID. Well, VLC has released an iPad app that will play just about any type of video file, right on your iPad!

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework, that plays most multimedias files and various streaming protocols.

It is simple to use, yet very powerful and extendable.

VLC has all codecs built-in. It comes with support for nearly all codec there is. And what is more it can even play back the file or media if it is damaged! Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that’s still intact.

VLC has been an incredible media playback app for the desktop for a while, and now we can have this awesome app on our iPads. Syncing media for the VLC app is easy. In iTunes, on your iPad’s Apps tab, scroll down to the bottom, select VLC, and add whatever videos you want.

When you open the app, you see shelves with you your videos. You just tap the one you want to play it.

From my experience, playback is pretty good. Any AVI files I played, played back really smooth. I did notice MKV (Matrovka) files played back a little choppy. Not sure if that was because of the codec, the RAM of the iPad, or the size of the file. Overall, the video quality is excellent.

iMovie Updated To v1.1 – Adds Support For iPod Touch 4G
