iOS 4.2 GM Released To Developers. Public Release Soon!

Apple is now allowing access to Xcode and iOS 4.2 SDK GM Seed, build 10M2423, and firmware build 8C134. Registered developers can head over to the Apple iPhone Dev Center to download. The final version of iOS 4.2 is expected to be available sometime this November.

WARNING: If you jailbreak/unlock your iPhone, DO NOT UPDATE right away. iOS 4.2 cannot be jailbroken properly yet, and the baseband that comes with it cannot be unlocked yet. Just be patient, and wait for the tools to be updated. The iPhone Dev Team will have an update for us, shortly after iOS 4.2 is public, and then we’ll know where we stand.

Useful Apps: VoodooPad and VP Reader by Flying Meat

Sometimes I can remember the most obscure detail from the remote past. Sometimes I can’t remember what I was doing yesterday. How do I remember all the insignificant trivia that I need to do my job or use my computer?

VoodooPad by Flying Meat is a notepad with hierarchy, links, search, relationship, and paste capabilities. You can record web links in a context that you will remember why you saved it in the first place. Maybe add a reminder why. The coolest part is it is completely unstructured. You don’t have to organize your thoughts to save it. You just dump it onto a page as if your were creating a webpage or using a private wiki. You can paste in parts of web pages (from Grab.app) or spreadsheets or documents or parts of PDFs. Supposedly you can import whole documents, but I don’t.

It works on a Mac. And you can replicate all your data on your iPhone with VP Reader in the App Store. So as you store important information, you can look it up on the phone when you are away from your mac. The export to iPhone only works via WiFi.

Turn on WiFi on your Mac and iPhone
You open VP Reader on the iPhone and press “Sync”
In VoodooPad on the Mac you “File,” “Export Document,” and “Export to iPhone”
VoodooPad “sees” VP Reader and you hit the Export Button.

Right now, you can’t edit on the iPhone. But you can write notes and then cut and paste them into VoodooPad when you are back at the Mac.

What CDs did I loan to my kids and never got back?

And I have to admit, I still can’t remember why I saved half this stuff.

The folks at Flying Meat have added the ability to sync your documents (the whole hierarchy) between your Macs using MobileMe or any WebDAV server. And you can publish your whole hierarchy on your MobileMe or another web server and make it available to anyone via a web browser. Not smart if you don’t want people to see your Explanation of Benefits. But if you wanted to use it to distribute reference information to your workgroup, or if you wanted to access the data from a non-Mac computer it is a great feature. Supposedly you can serve the web page with your MobileMe password as security. But it takes some extra steps so don’t do the publishing thing if you are planning to keep private information.

I have been using this for so long, I can’t imagine functioning without it. Now if I could only find an app that will help me forget pesky memories….

We Have the White iPhone 4! Kind of…

With all the recent talk of the mysterious white iPhone 4 being delayed again, or possibly even cancelled, it seems folks who have been patiently waiting, are now out of luck. Well, if you’re willing to put out a little extra money and a bit of work, you can have your very own white iPhone 4. Kind of.

The iPhone 4′s back battery cover is very easy to replace. If you could get your hands on a white one, it’s just a matter of removing 2 screws, sliding off the cover, replacing the cover, then replacing the screws. Head over to Mobile Parts Discount, to find all the replacement parts you might need for many different Apple iDevices. They were nice enough to build this back cover for me, with the frame from a black iPhone 4, and the glass of a white iPhone 4. You may have to order the parts separate, and build it yourself. You could just order the white glass, and build it into your existing frame. We did not attempt replace the front, but I prefer to have the front in black, anyway.

Here’s a quick video showing how to replace the back cover of the iPhone 4. Typically, the only reason you would want to do this, is if you dropped your iPhone 4 and the back glass cover broke. In my case, I’m just trying out the white back cover.

Security Flaw Found in iOS4.1 to Bypass Passcode Lockscreen

Oh man, this is not good. An iPhone 4 user, by name of Salomão Filho, has discovered a security bug in iOS 4.1, that allows you to bypass a passcode protected lockscreen.

From the passcode lockscreen, go to the emergency call screen.
Dial a fake number. Any number, doesn’t matter what.
As soon as you see the red End Call button, tap the sleep/wake button. You gotta be quick!
You will then be taken right to the iPhone app, and free to view all the contacts on the device and make calls to any of them.

We did our own tests, and found the same bug:

Not sure if this will work from a non-activated device, as we didn’t have one to test. Apple will most likely have this fixed in iOS 4.2, which comes out in November. Let us know you can reproduce this, and comment below! - rorypiper

iPhone Version of VLC Player Now Available On App Store

The moment you’ve all been waiting for, VLC Media Player is now available in the iTunes App Store as an iPhone application and free. “VLC is a free and open source multimedia player. It reads almost every video file, yet it’s very powerful and simple to use.” (iPad users read here).

VLC features:

Runs on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the recent iPod touches
You can now delete files from the application, without having to go through iTunes
Many more extensions are being recognized.
Much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimizations

Verizon iPhone, Where Art Thou?

After months of speculation, it seems that the Verizon iPhone is real and in final stages of field testing.

Does this mean that we’ll get to see another iPhone lost in a bar before its release? Well, yeah.

According to Boy Genius Report, the iPhone 3.2, which was spotted in the new firmware, is the Verizon iPhone.

Now we’re not entirely sure but it seems as there will be a sim slot present.

How does this become CDMA iPhone?

This might be both CDMA/GSM capable, but lets see what Mr. Jobs has in mind.

New hardware?

Probably the antenna issue should be resolved in this iPhone.

So, you may have noticed some changes around here. The past week has been incredibly busy for us! A little while ago, we decided to change the way we do things, and what we write about. We love reporting on Apple news, rumours, and stuff, but our hearts are in the jailbreak community. We decided to split things up and open a new site dedicated to jailbreaking.

The problem was, we didn’t want to just start from scratch. We looked around for a domain that suited us, and that was easily recognizable as a place to learn about the jailbreak community. In searching for a new domain, we stumbled upon www.iJailbreak.com. Those of you who have been around for a while will remember this as one of the early jailbreak blogs, from Chronic Dev Team member AriX. After some discussions, we were able to acquire the domain from him, and we have just redesigned and re-launched the site.

So, what does this mean for iEvolution? It will still be here, don’t worry, but our focus here will be more on Apple news, Apple rumours, product, and app reviews; things we have brought you all along. The change will be that, all news on jailbreaking and unlocking will now be posted over at www.iJailbreak.com. Hope to see you there!

iPhone Finds Its Way To SPACE

Have you ever wanted to go to space? Well of course but too bad, you can’t. If you love your iPhone and want to send it to space, that can be arranged.

A father and his 7 year old son from the “Brooklyn Space Program” launched a weather balloon into the stratosphere along with an iPhone and a HD camera.

Luke Geissbuhler, the father and his son Max, made this custom built capsule that would hold the camera and iPhone in it’s place throughout the flight. The camera was used to capture the entire flight and the iPhone was used for it’s built in GPS, so the balloon could be tracked when it would land.

The balloon went up 100,000 feet and faced winds up to 100-m.p.h. But as they say “What goes up, must come down.”

The balloon was later retrieved from upstate New York, about 30 miles from the launch point.

How did the iPhone and camera survive the fall?

Special parachutes were made and attached to the capsule so that the expensive HD camera and iPhone would reach the the ground safely.

If that was my iPhone up there, I’d have a heart attack just as the balloon would burst. I mean come on, you couldn’t find a cheaper alternative? What about those GPS watches they hand out to boy scouts?

Apple has updated it’s Remote application for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, bringing fixes for a number of bugs and includes performance and stability enhancements.

New in version 2.0.1:
